Bio:There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.
-- Linus Van Pelt

All the fun of sitting still, being quiet, writing down numbers. Yes, science has it all.
-- Seymour Skinner

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
-- Thomas Jefferson

When you can measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager, unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced the state of science.
-- William Thompson, First Baron Kelvin

My object in living is to unite my avocation and my vocation as my two eyes make one in sight.
-- Robert Frost, "Two Tramps in Mud Time"

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
-- Rabindranath Tagore

I cannot live without books.
-- Thomas Jefferson

Looking at the cake's like looking at the future. Until you've tasted it, what do you really know? And then, of course, it's too late.
-- Merlin, from John Boorman's Excalibur

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
-- Thomas Jefferson

Karma can only be portioned out by the cosmos.
-- Homer Simpson

Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter.
-- Ansel Adams

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
-- Benjamin Franklin

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
-- Thomas Jefferson

People who enjoy eating sausage and obey the law should not watch either being made.
-- Otto von Bismarck

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
-- Thomas Jefferson

If it blows up, it's chemistry. If it stinks, it's biology. If it doesn't work, it's physics.
-- Unknown

Physics is like sex. Sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.
-- Richard Feynman

I'm just white-knuckling it with the muse.
-- Brooke McEldowney

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist thinks it will change; the realist adjusts the sails.
-- William Arthur Ward

Math, my boy is nothing more than the lesbian sister of Biology.
-- Peter Griffin

Let's see... what am I? Look up contradiction in any dictionary, you may find my photo. Shy. Flirty. Unrepentant smart-ass. Tolerant. Cynical. Silly. Sarcastic. Respectful. Fun-loving. Reserved. My sense of humor has been described as Monty Python meets Peanuts. I don't make friends easily, but those I have are very close, often considered my "chosen family". I could go on, but you'll just have to read my entries for more. I was an Observer type for years, now I'm trying to get off my you-know-what and have a life, for crying out loud. I may appear very stoic in person or in my writing before one gets to know me. I can be very passionate about things, though, when the motivation strikes me.

My Feynman Number is 2.

Married to [info]datagoddess since July, 1992. No kids except perhaps ourselves. Currently, I'm going to school at Purdue, working toward an eventual Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, specifically studying cloud microphysics.

I am very much an autodidact with regard to several subjects, a polymath. I normally shun labels, but will admit to being various flavors of geek: weather, video, photography, map, road, geography, travel, aviation, film, comic strip, comic book, physics, astronautics, geology, fire, linguistics, waterfowl, folk dance, anglophile, celtic culture, germanic culture, turkish (central asian) culture... the list goes on. One geek label I fight/refuse to wear is computer. I like to think I know them very well and use them very well as a tool/means to pursue my other geekdoms, but I draw the line at considering myself a computer geek. :-)

I don't really use this journal as a repository for everything that is going on in my life. I think of it and much of the closer folks on my friends list as a way to keep in touch. I don't like the LJ term "friends" for the lists of users I want to read/to be able to read my posts. To me, the term "friend" means much more. Some people on my lists on LJ I do consider friends (or much more). I don't necessarily reciprocally add someone who adds me, nor do I expect same from someone I add. I also may remove users from my list from time to time, if I feel like I'm not reading that user or I feel overwhelmed. It's not personal.
